As a child, I was interested in drawing and learning how to paint. Opportunities for learning beyond paint by number kits were limited. Somehow I always felt I had ‘an oil painting inside of me’ that needed to come out. I have not received any formal art education. In my mid-forties, to honor the painter within, I began my first informal art class working with oils. Within a short time, my teacher was diagnosed with cancer and died. It took two more years before I had the opportunity to again take informal classes with a local art teacher who held classes in her home. Here I explored oil, charcoal, watercolor and pastel learning the rudiments of each medium. Within a few years, I was showing my work locally in Peoria, Illinois for a Native American community and in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois where I lived at the time.
When we moved to Gaylord, MI I joined the local Artists’ Guild, attended their workshops, meetings, entered juried shows and gained a wealth of knowledge from the many gifted artists who willingly shared their expertise. Critiquing each other’s’ work was invaluable.
In 2015 my husband and I moved to Lawton, MI to be close to our son and his family and to make it more convenient for my daughter, who lives in Fiji and works for the UN, to come and visit without driving all over Michigan to gather. I joined the Southwest Michigan Artists’ Association and participate in their activities, showing my work in the Paw Paw Gallery and in businesses in the area.
Painting with oils has long been the most comfortable medium for me but recently I have been exploring pastel. Occasionally I play with watercolor and acrylic as well as work with stained glass. My subject matter has been indigenous peoples and cultures as well as nature.
Over the years I have been juried into art shows with The Gaylord Area Council of the Arts, Gaylord, MI; Carnegie Center for the Arts, Three Rivers, MIi; and the Westminster Art Festival, Portage, MI.
